ANTI SMOKING ACTION PLAN

For those NYP students who don't have the habit of opening your student mail, this is an email I'd like everyone to see. haha.

Dear Student,

Background
In recent months, more and more students have been smoking at the campus boundaries near the sunken plaza, the Overhead Bridge at Ang Mo Kio Ave 5 and the rear gate at Ang Mo Kio Ave 9. These smokers have moved progressively onto the campus grounds by smoking directly outside the sunken plaza and the overhead bridge, both of which are within the boundary areas of NYP. We have received feedback from various sources that the sight of smokers at our campus entrances reflects poorly on NYP and the students & graduates of the Polytechnic.

NYP's Stand
You are hereby reminded that smoking is strictly prohibited on NYP groups and at all legislated non-smoking areas (such as bus-stops). As stated in the Student Handbook, it is against the law for any one to smoke within the polytechnic premises. Anyone found guilty of the offence may be fined up to $1,000.

At NYP, we believe that smoking is bad for the smoker's health as well as those around him/her. Every student is entitled to a smoke-free environment that is conducive to learning. All staff are empowered by the Polytechnic to enforce discipline on campus. When any staff encounters an offence committed, they have the authority to reprimand the student for the offence, demand for and make a copy of the Student's Card, and report the offence to the Registrar or School Director for follow-up actions.

What You Can Do for Your Fellow Students and for NYP
As NYP's students, you are our ambassadors and future leaders of our society. If you are a student with friends who are smokers, please encourage them to give up the habit. If you are a smoker yourself, please be mindful of the consequences of that puff and the harmful benefits it has on you and your loved ones. If you require any help in giving up the habit, please call the Quit line at 1800-4382000, which is managed by specially trained nurses at the Health Promotion Board. (You can still call Quitline even if you are just thinking about quitting. Speaking to a Quit Adviser will give you a better picture of what help is available).

Enforcement
In the last week of this month, we will be introducing stricter patrolling and enforcement of the no-smoking rule within the boundary areas (all areas within the blue boundary lines are considered NYP areas). Staff and Security guards have been empowered to take action against students who continue to smoke within the campus boundaries. These cases will be referred to the Registrar's Office for disciplinary action. Errant students who continually flout the no-smoking rule within the campus boundaries may be issued warning letters, fines and even face debarment from exams under NYP's rules and regulations. Parents of smokers will be notified of the offence.

We believe that keeping our Poly a smoke-free campus is possible with the support of everyone at NYP. Let's work towards a healthier campus .......... and a healthier you.

Thank you.
Registrar

I agree totally, the long walk to school is often dreaded by me due to the car exhaust fumes and cigarette smoke. Oh the horror.

Just take the advice, dun smoke. Cos no offence but I dislike smokers, A LOT.
